Puppy or New Adopted Dog Checklist

Here is our pared down list of things we consider essential in getting a dog settled in your home.

Training Equipment

For training, we alway recommend harnesses as it takes the pressure of the throat and prevents collapsed tracheas later in life.

These are the best training dog harnesses and leashes on the market to encourage good walking and training.

Interactive Toys & Chews

Dog toys and chews are quite integral to keeping your dog mentally stimulated and in the case of chews help clean teeth

Congratulations on the new family addition! Having a dog can be a wonderful blessing. However, it can also be quite overwhelming even for those who have had a dog before. Here are our suggestions to help with this new transition.

  1. Adjustment Period - Recognize that the new puppy or adopted dog might be stressed about leaving their pack or trying to form a new pack. There might be whining, scratching and separation anxiety involved. Your dog may not feel like eating for the first day or so and that is normal.
  2. Provide Necessities - Always provide water. Provide a comfortable space and start early with training to ensure success. That can include things like set meal times and not leaving food sitting for long periods, setting boundaries such as no jumping and teaching your dog what is acceptable.
  3. Training and Socialization - Trainings is essential for a well-behaved dog. Start with basic commands and house training and then slowly socialize your dog with a few other dogs and people, one at a time to get them used to different situations. Please refrain from going to the doggy park unless you know your dog has had that kind of socialization.
  4. Bonding & Patience - Enjoy the new bond and build trust between you and your dog. Have patience during the transition so that you can solve any behavioural issues that may come up.

You could get your dog a new bed.

However, in the beginning we normally recommend that you get to know your puppy or new adopted dog in terms of their chew habits. Puppies can tear up beds so that might not be a good investment. We suggest using an old towel or blanket to provide a comfortable sleeping environment and then graduate to a bed when you are sure your new family dog won’t chew the bed

Congratulations on the new family!

Here are our suggestiong for things you can have at home for your new dog or adopted dog:

  1. Chews & Toys - Dog chews (only after you’ve figured out if your dog is docile when things are taken from it)
  2. Comfort based - Beds, dog toothbrush, hair brush and a collar for a quick night time pee.
